András Bergmann cello bow

This cello bow was stamped by András Bergmann around 1920. The special characteristic of the pernambucco stick is that the head was lifted by an inlay of the same material in order to reach the necessary size. Knowing the economic situation of Hungary in the 1920s obviously this wasn't an expensive bow and most likely it was made in Germany.

The finishing of the head is evidence of neat and confident craftsmanship. The design is reminiscent of the Voirin school.

The chamfer is cut in a relatively flat (obtuse) angle, it runs almost parallel alongside the throat into a sudden widening along the head and stick transition.

We can see from topview that the archings of the head are beautiful, although not symmetrical.

The frog was made of ebony with nickel silver settings. The throat is less open than that of the violin bow, the shape evokes the Voirin school.

The bent, nickel silver heel is pinned at two places, the sides of the frog are nice and deeply arched. The button rings are octagonal. The sides of the slides are parallel.

From this view you can see the fine finishing of the frog. The upper arch of the ferrule is slightly sharp and asymmetrical.

The adjuster consists of three parts. There are two octagonal silver nickel button rings sitting on an ebony core. No sign of pinning.

At the two ends of the even and narrow mortice there are two small cuts made in order to reduce the risk of cracking. The nipple is also a fine piece of work.

The stamp is rather worn, but comparing it to the stamp of the violin bow we can see that they are identical.

This bow was donated by Ferenc Kőrösi. Thank you very much!
